Drive North Queensland ready for winter rush

Drive North Queensland has launched the second edition of the Drive North Queensland Map promoting iconic drives including the Great Barrier Reef Drive, Great Tropical Drive, and Epic Cape York.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) Chief Executive Officer Mark Olsen said 50,000 copies of the map would be distributed at caravan and camping shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as well as through Visitor Information Centres in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

“Drive North Queensland is a very successful collaboration with Townsville Enterprise, Tourism Whitsundays, Mackay Isaac Tourism, Outback Tourism and TTNQ,” he said.

“Drive holidays have always played an important role in dispersing visitors throughout our destination and this was particularly evident over the past two years when outlying areas along drives like the Savannah Way were booked out as families and couples took to the road in camper trailers and RVs.

“In 2021 Tropical North Queensland had 1.2 million drive visitors, representing 60 per cent of our domestic market which helped drive domestic expenditure to a record $2.7 billion last year.

“Having spent their holiday savings on vehicles and camping equipment, Australians will be keen to explore more of our country and North Queensland will be especially popular in winter for southerners wanting a warm tropical holiday.

“We anticipate strong repeat visitation with travellers thanks to the diversity of Tropical North Queensland where the scenery changes from beaches to lush rainforest, hinterland with patchwork farms and out to the drier country of the beautiful outback.

“Staff from each of the Regional Tourism Organisations will represent Drive North Queensland at camping and caravan shows in the capital cities where they will connect with millions of eager travellers and hand out the maps and talk to consumers about the diverse drive holidays available. “

The team attended the Victorian Caravan Camping and Touring Supershow in Melbourne on April 6-10. They will attend the NSW Caravan Camping Holiday Supershow in Sydney on April 19-25 and the Let’s Go Queensland Caravan and Camping Supershow in Brisbane on June 8-13.
