Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chair Max Shepherd said small business owners spent so much time building the business and developing their passion that they often underestimated how easy it was to come crashing down.
“The Protecting Your Business workshop will give small businesses an advantage as the attendees will learn about Intellectual Property, the Privacy Act, succession planning and credit management,” he said.
“The team of four presenters from MacDonnells Law is led by Partners Russell Beer and Eleanor Scott, and joined by lawyer Ben Meredith and Special Counsel Donna Patane, the Tropical North’s only registered Trademark Attorney.
“They will present information on getting the legal framework in place for small businesses on Wednesday 14 June from 3pm to 5pm.
“This is the second time the small business support program has covered these topics as the initial workshop on Intellectual Property with Ms Patane was sold out so we brought it back again.”
Ms Patane covers trademarks, patents, design, copyright and confidential information. The other topics covered in the workshop will explain how the Privacy Act works so you can avoid making simple but costly mistakes with your client’s data.
Succession planning is about who will run your business when you can’t or don’t want to, and credit management covers making sure you get paid for your product or service and what to do when you don’t.
Attendees of the workshop are eligible to receive legal advice from the team at MacDonnells law at a heavily subsidised rate. At just $70 per hour instead of $390 per hour for two-three hours of legal work (not all face-to face), it makes asking legal questions easier for small or new tourism businesses.
The program is supported by the Australian Small Business Advisory Services – Northern Australia Tourism Initiative, an Australian Government initiative. It is for TTNQ member and non-member businesses (or start-ups) that receive a significant portion of revenue from tourism and have fewer than 20 full-time equivalent employees. Businesses and business intenders can participate in as many activities as they would like.
